Cel telephone for a few months for a canadian

So, this is the time to fly again South for the winter. My trivial questions is:

- What is the best (and the cheapest) telephone system for a Canadian, while in the USA? We use home telephone while in Canada, and normally have no use for the cel, so therefore we do not have one. But on the road is another story. A couple of winters ago we purchased from Walmart a basic Track 10, or something like that. I'd prefer something with better voice quality, as my hearing is going down the drain. For international calls we use Skype (while connected to internet.)

Please advice. Thank you.
  • Have a look at iroam.com. I use two of their simm cards in my unlocked phones. One with a Canadian number and the other with a USA number. For us we find campgrounds etc.. while snowbirding, are more prone to call back a USA number for reservations etc. It doesn't cost them anything more to call long distance to the USA number but a lot more to call back a Canadian number. Sorry a little off topic, they also have good cell phones that they guarantee and are good for travelling anywhere in the world. A good short or long term pay as you go phone.
  • I have used a trac phone for years. built up lots of minutes on yearly cards, then switched to a service continuation plan with no minutes. probably would be better/cheaper to switch back to a 2x or 3x plan for one year for $100 but just avoid the hassle of renewing yearly.

  • I have a TracFone that I keep in my truck as a spare in case I forget to bring my iPhone (which I do often). The smartphone (LG Optimus Fuel) cost me $10 at Dollar General and there's a $20 card you can buy that gives me 180 minutes, 180 texts, and 180 MB that's good for 90 days. Minutes, texts, and data rolls over if you don't use it. If you're not a big phone user, this should work for you. The phone is not top of the line, but for $10, it's decent. Has camera, Android, works on wifi, too, to save data.
  • We have used Tracfone for the past 5 years. Lat year we bought a new LG Tracfone at walmart. It works very well and cost I think about 20 dollars. It does have the option of speakerphone which may help in hearing.
  • I was thinking around this line as well. But just in case technology changed, I posted my question.

    Which one you recommend?
  • Back to walmart. They sell several different phones and, plans.
