Disagree with your recommending "turn off sync". Why would you not want your email folders and such syncing. OP, can fix his problem with a simple setting change. Not necessary to disable email sync!

"downtheroad" has the proper answer! We are on line and don't get the right answer all the time.

Open the Email app and display the main screen, such as the combined inbox.

Press the Menu button and choose the Settings command.

Choose Account Settings.

All the phone's e-mail accounts are listed.

Choose an e-mail account.

Touch the More Settings button.

Choose the Incoming Settings item.

If you can't find an Incoming Settings command, you're dealing with a web-based e-mail account, in which case there's no need to worry about the Server Delete option.

Beneath the item Delete Email from Server, choose the option When I Delete from Inbox.

The only other option besides When I Delete from Inbox is Never. If you see the Never option, choose the other one.

Touch the Done button.

go into settings apps tap gmail and turn sync off
