Cell phone service for Canada -> U.S. if no sim card?

My primary internet access is via Motosat satellite internet, and it's too slow to use Skype.

I have the Verizon mi-fi as a backup (and can use Vonage on that), but I was under the impression my Verizon mi-fi wouldn't work in Canada. Or if it did work, it would be prohibitively expensive. Am I wrong about that?

And what account would I put a few dollars on to use Skype?
