Verizon Cell Phone service in Canada

We will be in Canada for 3 to 4 weeks. We will be in western Ontario at Sioux Narrows for a week and then on the Polar Bear excursion north through Manitoba to Thompson, MB. Verizon's coverage map shows Canada coverage along most of the highways that we will be traveling. Has anyone had experience using their cell phone in those areas? It looks like I can add this service for a month for $15.00. It gives us a 1000 minutes of voice in Canada with texting. Data is not included and quite expensive if we use it. We'll just turn cellular data off. I guess for $15 it's worth a try.
  • You are heading to areas that have very sporadic 3G networks. There will be little or no service along the railway to Churchill. Bell Canada has the largest network and here is a link to it's Coverage Map.
  • Well, I spoke to the Global Service person of Verizon. For $15/mth, I can add the Canada service to my Family Share Plan. Texting is still unlimited. Voice changes from unlimited to 1000 minutes for the month. Since we average 650, I can work with that. Data..you don't want to do that. It is about $2 per megabyte. That is $200 per Gigabyte. So we will avoid data during this time period. We will use the local CG Wifi or do without. I have looked at that coverage maps and assume it will be spotty.

  • All the above answers kind of worries me......Verizon (or their representatives) giving different answers all the time!!!!! wow!

  • Howdy!

We have a Verizon share plan an added Canada 1000 minutes for $15.00 a month an turned off data on our phones. We've been traveling in the maritimes now over three months no problems with phone service.

  • I was in Canada in July, I called Verizon the week before we left and had Canada voice and text added to our phones for $15 for one month. it was not a problem.
  • We just returned home from an Alaska trip and we have Verizon phones. There were no deals for Verizon service. They did set our phones so they would work in Canada. When I first looked last winter, I could have added Canada for $20 a month. When I got ready to do that, it was no longer available (May 2013). They had just stopped offering any plan. All they would do was add the calling capability in Canada and all calls were at 89 cents per minutes.

We shut our phones off in Canada. I picked up a calling card at a 7-11 and used it at pay phones when I wanted to make a call.
