I got an external antenna and it boosts it to some extent, maybe one bar. Some friends live out in the boonies and have had no service, but they actually got a booster that they paid over $400 for and they now have 2-3 bar service within a 100 yard radius of their home. It does work, but I don't know which one they purchased.
ON EDIT: They do have a pretty substantial antenna they put on top of the house, but it let them get rid of their home phone and gave them a little bit of internet access, too.
