You were casting from your computer to your TV? That should work even with your phone off. Even casting from your phone shouldn't be a data issue because casting requires you have wifi enabled.
I would look to see if you didn't accidentally start a stock ticker or something else that chews bandwidth and is running in the background on your phone.
