Check Comcast's site here for modem compatibility before you commit. Comcast (and others) are using a protocol called DOCSIS 3.0 that is not supported on older modems. After swapping to a newer modem, just call their support line and they will activate your modem with the MAC address on the new one. I believe Comcast will push any firmware updates the vendor supplies them after they do testing on the update.
