I use Google Drive for backing up some of my stuff, and it works well enough. I've never had to pull anything back out, but I'm sure it will work fine.
As far as a USB drive "not be as fast as cloud storage," I'd have to say IME they are much faster than Google drive. It takes about 3 minutes to upload a 7 meg folder with several other sub-folder in it. A USB drive is going to do that in seconds. Of course if you have a very fast upload speed it may work better.
I use the "cloud" for redundant storage. I'd never use it as my sole backup.
Good call on redundancy. I'm showing my age again, when I say it's the only way to back things up. Once, twice, thrice, if you want to maximize your recovery capability.
I can usually get my data, double encrypted, hard drive defragged, on the drives in under 4 hours, and the total is around 70GB, but one of the folders is a pictures file that grows fairly steadily.
Not a fan of cloud storage, as it's fraught with potential security issues. Whoever manages the servers, can read my stuff in spite of what they tell me, because they hold the encryption keys in most cases, and that's not a good thing, imo.
