That remind me my son experience few years back.
We were with no coverage area, but he relied on cellphone for alarm clock.
But it did not ring.
Turn out when there is no coverage, the phone keeps seeking the coverage and takes much more power, so it drained the batteries in just few hr.
Don't know if smart phones have better software, but something to check before depending on it.
