Computer data ??

Hello all,

Is there a way to get services like Netflix in a park that does not have wifi? I have a jetpack but the data is low. If I was to use it for something like Netflex it would cost way to much. Any ideas ?

Thank you,
Dave

Sounds like a good plan. Plenty of restaurants and public libraries around. Keep your eyes open when you're traveling.

    Don't be so cheap.

Campgrounds provide "free" Wifi for ALL campers to use, if ALL the campers decided to stream movies at the same time it won't take long for NOBODY to be able to use the wifi in the park.

WiFi by its design is very limited in "bandwidth" or basically how much data can be shoved through a small funnel. Use it for Emails and light surfing which IS the intentions of the park management.

Don't be a cheapskate, use your own hotspot (and your own data plan) or bring your own/rent DVDs like everyone else.

We could never depend on any of the WIFI things around anywhere...

Something like the JETPACK is about all we deal with on the camping runs... We get by with less than 3GB of DATA per month... Using VERIZON is the Best Service for us where we usually end up at camping wise...

For us its just checking in with the kids, paying a few bills, keeping tabs on the emails, and maybe just a little of surfing the internet...

We get all the TV shows we want to watch for free using the OTA Batwing antenna and picking up the NATl BROADCAST digital HDTV from the local towns... We have a great 25-40 mile range with our BATWING OTA Crank up antenna on our trailer. The digital HDTV is actually better than most of the cable TV connections we get at the camp grounds.. The OTA HDTV station have movies and other interesting things to watch in addition to the standard broadcast channels. They usually have a 24 hour RADAR WX BROADCAST as well. You also may get to learn a few different languages too when all you get is the PBS channels... Kinda funny to watch the GunSmoke series in german. "Heir Dillon,Was ist los" only us dumb hick Americans laugh at this...

  • If I'm going to be in a park for a month or more, I arrange for internet from the local cable or phone company. I don't care if the park has wifi or not. I want my data and I want it NOW and FAST! :)

"Like Netflix" - so that, to me, means you're streaming video over the internet. I can think of three ways to do that in a park: WiFi (discussed), smart phone HotSpot ($$$$$), and Satellite ($$$ and slow).

As to the cost, Dave it depends on your plan.

A typical movie or show off Netflix will use about 1 Gigabyte of data every hour. Good enough for back-of-the enevlope calcs.

Check your plan and decide how many free Gigabytes are included before you start getting slammed with overage charges.

I'm a nerd, and we bring DVDs and hit Redbox. :)
  • Pretty much impossible without a fast internet connection. Even in a park with WiFi, the video is very likely to be so choppy as to be unwatchable.
