Computer Won't Shut Down?

I did not want to get premature in measuring success.

But, I did the boot up in safe and then rebooted normally and it has been shutting down normally now.

Depending on your settings, it could be applying downloaded updates to your system prior to shutting down. You can go in to your control panel and stop any auto updates by selecting to manually apply updates. The shop may also have set it to automatically do maintenance tasks prior to shutting down.

Seems that Microsoft is aware of the problem. Look for "UPHClean" on the microsoft website. It is a service that loads at boot and on shutdown will unload the User Profile Hive.

UPHClean is a service that once and for all gets rid of problems with user profile not unloading.

You are having profile unload problems if you experience slow logoff (with Saving Settings for most of the time while logging off), roaming profiles that do not reconcile, or the registry size limit is reached.

WHY DO PROFILES NOT UNLOAD?

Many system and service processes do work on behalf of users. When the work is done the system or service process is responsible for releasing handles it has to the user profile hive. If this is not done by the service as the user logs off the profile cannot be unloaded. .......

It most cases, if you hold down the power button, it will do a forced shutdown. When you power back up, Windows should have detected the forced shutdown and give you an option to do a repair?

However, in many cases, I also just boot into Safe Mode. Shutdown, and power up into Windows desktop. Which clears the stuck shutdown issue.

Next time, boot up to Safe mode. Then restart to Normal mode.

See if that clears it up.

I'm guessing my DELL LAPTOP is not totalling shutting down. It has four small lights on the left front panel and the farthest light to the left stays on. However all of external monitors, usb lights on mouse and keyboard all shut down right away. When I raise my computer laptop lid the screen is blank too but this light on the front panel stays on until I hold down the POWER BUTTON on the laptop for a few seconds.... Then it goes out... This light has the POWER ON/OFF symbol stanped by it... I do leave my laptop transformer module plugged in all the time. Maybe this is telling me the batteries are being charged??? haha.. I will remove the transformer plug the next time I shut down and see if that makes a difference...

My ACER netbook from day one was slow to shut down with windows 7 premium home , I added 4GB of ram with a total of 6GB of ram and still slow to shut down. Up graded to windows 10 and it shuts down fast.

If you have the disk for the operating system, you can do a repair.

Also try updating your drivers.

It sounds like one of the programs isn't working properly or an issue with a hardware driver.

My WIN8.1 that was converterd to WIN 10 does the same thing... Worked ok at first than later on started doing this.

I thought for awhile it had something to do with me using dual monitors with it as it seems to work normal if I am only working my my DELL LAPTOP using its lid monitor. Sometimes it shuts down down normal after hitting the screen POWER OFF using the mouse.

My normal way of powering up is to raise the LAPTOP lid and hit the start button and I usually let it boot to the LOGIN Screen then close the laptop lid. This then powers up both my dual monitors with the MON 1 having the login screen on it. then I log-in from my console setup here...

Sometimes doing it this way I have to riase the laptop lid up and then back down again as my resolutions settting started up wrong for the two monitors... Most of the time it works great..

I also have never waited it out. Will have to try that the next time I shut down with the mouse click. Some one awahile back suggested to do the SHUTDOWN settings again from the control panel and resave them and shut down immediately after making the changes... I tried this and it worked normal for one time haha... Then after turning all back on the next morning it went right to having me open my laptop lid and pushing the main power off button to power down after the mouse click on the power down feature on the screen...
