Dell Laptop Problem

I went to the SETTINGS from my WIN10 Screen which I am running in WIN 7 mode...

Went to the POWER SETTINGS and selected 'NEVER' in all the settings.

Then I went to normal view and clicked on a few tabs and finally went back to the 'POWER' setting on the WIN10 screen. Using the mouse I selected 'SHUTDOWN'

This then shutdown all of my open TABS and turned off my two 24-inch DELL MONITORS.

The LAPTOP then went into its shutdown procedure and finally tunred off all of the lights on the front panel edge (lid is closed) except the one to the farthest left. I had to open the LAPTOP lid and push the POWER BUTTON for a few seconds to turn off this light.


I waited a couple of minutes and started up the laptop again by raising the lid and pushing the power button. Laptop and Dual Monitors jump to life up to the login screen. Then I close the LAPTOP lid and now only work from the keyboard and dual monitors....

I logged in again using my PASSWORD and system restars in less than one minute just like before...

I went ahead and opened a few tabs like I always do and did a few things...

Then I go to the SYSTEM Menu on the monitor screen and select POWER again. Then clicked on the 'SHUTDOWN' option again.

This time all of the opened tabs closed and monitor screen goes to shutdown mode and finally turns off the monitors like before.

this time however all of the lights on the front of closed lid LAPTOP goes OFF...

Everything is now powered down.

I repeated the turn ON and SHUTDOWN three times and each time it worked like it used to - shutting down without having to opening the LAPTOP and pushing the POWER BUTTON to turn it all off...

Sounds like success to me - Thanks for the tip...

ADDED NOTE on April 5, 2016 for LAPTOP...
Went thru the shut down procedure at 10PM last evening using the Monitor screen and selecting POWER and SHUTDOWN using the external mouse... All tab programs shutdown as normal and 24-Inch monitors all turned OFF..

The LAPTOP however went thru its shutdown procedures and all shut down except my USB FAN Tray stayed on as well as the far left led status light on the front of the Laptop. I had to raise the Laptop Lid and push the Power button for a few seconds to complete the turn-off procedure.

This morning on April 5 2016 at 5AM when I started everything up again I checked the System Power settings and all remained to be set at 'NEVER' which I changed to yesterday. Guess my SUCCESS was short lived...

I will soon be getting one of those Dell USB 3.0 Triple Display UltraHD Universal Dock (D3100) from AMAZON that only plugs into the 3.0 USB LAPTOP Connection. This will speed up moving the LAPTOP between the house and the RV setups. The rest of the connections to my Dual monitors, Keyboard, Sound System, and AUX connections for my Ham radio will all be connected to the DOCKING station. This may change how the Laptop handles things.

No big deal as I have to open the Laptop Lid to initiate START-UP so I just as well have to open the LAPTOP Lid to SHUT-DOWN... No big deal just a change after one of the WIN10 system upgrades...

Was just thinking That I have never operated this LAPTOP in its stand alone mode with the LID-UP using the internal Keyboard and Mouse etc.. Guess I should try that one time and how it shuts down when I use the mouse to select POWER and SHUTDOWN.

This is an example of why it's not recommended to update your BIOS "just because". General advice is that you shouldn't update your computer's BIOS unless there is a specific known issue you are trying to fix and the updated BIOS is specifically available to address that known issue.

Updating the BIOS is fairly risky in that if the update goes south, the computer will be bricked and you will have no way to recover without sending the computer back to the mfr.

Hi Dave,
I don't see where I can turn the power settings OFF. Mine only has a choice of setting to NEVER?

original poster here - by the way I am running Windows 8.1 on this laptop.

Mine is having problems on powering down after one of the recent WIN 10 upgrades...

I select the POWER OFF from the screen and everything shuts down except I still have one light on the edge of the laptop and my fantray USB port is still active... To totally shut down I have to push the POWER OFF button under the LAPTOP lid for a few seconds...

I use my my DELL LAPTOP to run dual 24-inch monitors and external Keyboard - sound using the USB ports etc... Sort of a bummer I have to open the lid to turn it off... Have been doing this for a few months now...

Will try the setting the POWER OPTIONs all to OFF and then setup again... Sounds like a quick fix if it works for me...

Strange things is we have three Dells Laptops and one HP Laptop that was all upgraded to WIN10 at the same time back then on-line when told to do it...

My computer may be the only one doing this but come to think about it that mine in the only one running external monitors-keyboard etc. I only open my DELL to turn it ON and after it comes up onscreen looking for log-in I close the lid and use my external items to do the startup... Everything works great - login to full boot to screen display is usually less than a minute...

These newer high-end laptops from QVC-HSN that replaced all of my older WIN XP and WIN 7 - 8.1 machines really screams performance wise...

I should have mentioned that I did check the power settings for operating on battery and on power. I also checked the setting for what happens when I close the lid. I have changed those settings several times trying different things.

I have been using NEVER go into sleep mode for the power setting for the laptop since this problem started. That is allowing it to function for me. If I manually select Sleep mode, I get the same problem - i.e. it appears to go to sleep but when I push the power button to wake it up, it reboots.

I should also say that if I simply close all my programs and shut the laptop down manually, it works fine. I just would like to be able to use the sleep function again so I don't have to reopen every thing all the time. I like to keep multiple programs open and multiple pages on Chrome open while I research things.

Have you gone into the Windows power settings (for both plugged in and on battery power) and checked to see that everything is set to work the way you want it to?
