If you want to record in SD or DVD quality, it shouldn't be too much of a issue for a DVR to do so. You may have issues recording in HD, if the signal requires an HDCP compliant device due to copy protection. If so, a solution may be to use a HDMI splitter that supports HDCP, and can output to non-HDCP devices such as a third party DVR. These boxes should be available fairly inexpensively. However, if you need to convert the HDMI signal to an HD RF compatible input for your DVR, these may cost considerably more. Not sure, as I've never had to use these personally. But HDCP can cause display issues even with pro/broadcast equipment, especially when interfacing with digital scalers, typically used on high-end DLP laser projectors.
