Just get your cable company's recommended "Take your shows wherever you go" DVR.
Transfer a boat load to your computer,, 500 Gig Hard Drives are near 50 bucks now, Store over 400 hours of TV on the USB drive.
ONE of my TV's can play direct off the USB drive
All of them can take HDMI IN
And two of my computers have HDMI out.
One of my televisions even has VGA (extended or super, not sure which) input.
So that is how I'd do it, Transfer to an external HD on your laptop, all plug and play and the DVR from the cable company comes with the software.
I do what I do because this IS my home (The RV) so it all gets recorded here.. And quite well I might add.
