Direct TV - Carryout - What Receiver ???

I have made up my mind to go with the Direct TV RV package using the Winegard Carryout automatic satellite. Direct TV tells me I need to purchase my own receiver as they don't supply this. They told me to go through an RV dealership or purchase one from Ebay or Amazon. NOBODY seems to be able to tell me what model receiver I need to purchase. Since the Carryout only supports SD there is no reason to purchase an HD receiver so WHO can tell me what model I need ???
If more than one model will work please give me a few model #'s so I can look for something online rather than pay the inflated dealership prices. If a DVR receiver will work I would prefer that for SD also in the event I am away from the RV when a program is showing.

Why don't you buy the slimline dish and take it with you ?In this way you have HD TV.The set up is not hard.

Because, since my husband died, I have had it "up to HERE" with things that I can't get to work, and manually aiming a satellite dish is one of those things. Some of the others are ALL outdoor equipment with a gas engine/pull rope thing! Hence, my other recent purchase of an ELECTRIC pressure washer.

Besides, in a tiny 16' trailer, I don't think HD will make that much of a difference for my viewing pleasure...;)

  • You will need to change 2 settings. The first is you will need to go into the Repeat Satellite Setup and set the antenna type to 3-LNB and the Switch Type to 02-Multiswitch before trying to lock onto the satellite.
You would then also need to go into Setup>Display>Preferences and either select Hide HD channels for Show all Channels. Someone said their receiver did not have the Hide HD option and if that's the case you would have to select Show All.

I have the HR24-100 and HR21-700 receivers that give me HD at home and work well with the Carryout on SD when in the motorhome.

When switching from the house (HD) to the Carryout (SD) with the HR21-700, do you need to go in to settings and change HIDE SD channels to SHOW ALL CHANNELS ?

  • For SD only you can buy the D12 single tuner receiver or the R-16 DVR.
If you think you might ever need HD in the future or you want to use it in a house or cabin later with an HD antenna, then you can buy the H24 or the HR24 if you want a DVR. These are HD receivers which work fine for the reception of SD and gives you an upgrade option. You just cannot use the H25 or the Genie HR34/44.
