I have Direct TV service with a receiver in my MH. I'm converting my TVs to 12V and want to replace the Direct TV receiver to 12V. (Direct TV says they do not have 12V systems). A friend found 12V receivers available from England, Ice Crypt S1600 Mini HD 12V Satellite receiver for $110 + $45 shipping. Is anyone familuar with this receiver? Will it work w/ DTV, Do I just plug my DTV card into this unit? Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jim Ball

This sounds like a really bad idea. No you can't use your card. Why not just put in an inverter and use regular 120v stuff?

I dont know of any 12 v systems however one could be made if a decent radio/tv repair person tackled an existing unit.. Most electronics operate on 12v anyway within the system or just buy a converter from 120v to 12v power supply.Now that isn't the problem. The problem is your HU card is married to your current receiver. It will not work in any other receiver. If you plug it in to another receiver you will get a call EXT 722/ display. You then plug it back into your receiver and you will get decrypted signal. DTV got a grasp on their cards when they were crackable in the past with the current HU card. Your basically out of options except for the above.

With no more power than a satellite receiver draws, the simple way to go is just use a small 200 or 300 watt inverter to power it. Trying to find another receiver that "might?" work or have to alter it to make it work sounds like a waste of time.

A cheap inverter will do the trick. 25 bucks shoul do it easily.

If the receiver is Direct TV compatible, then you will have to call Direct TV and speak to someone in the Tech side, explain you own your own receiver. They will have to approve it and send you a card that will work.

I was wondering about that also after living down under in Sydney for a couple of years using a VCR to convert. Not sure if the digital/HDMI signal is coded differently.

What I did was install an 800 watt invertor behind the AC breaker panel where the convertor is located. The convertor has heavy cables feeding power to the house batteries and DC distribution so I have a good power source to get DC to the invertor. I cut the AC cable coming off the breaker that feeds the outlet for the entertainment systems and added a male and female plugs. Male going to the outlets female on the side coming from the breaker. Normally the plugs are together but if I want to run off the invertor I unplug from the breaker panel and plug into the inverter.

If you go with an invertor just ensure where ever you install it has good ventilation. It will get warm and if too warm cook it's self to death.

Not only are the receivers proprietary, but also:

analog TV signals in Europe use a different sweep rate than in North America. I would presume that digital will be the same. A TV purchased in Europe won't work in North America.

Get a small inverter as others have suggested.

It also appears that you have to have a third party software package to receive anything.

Plus that English receiver is probably set up for the PAL or PAL/SECAM system. Our TVs are NTSC system. I doubt that there is a switch to change the output to NTSC, as the only ones I have seen set up that was are the ones sold in the military PX/BX systems in Europe.

It would surprise me if a receiver made to work in Europe would work with DirecTV! DirecTV receivers are proprietary. Tivo has started making units again for DirecTV but they are still only for use with DirecTV. The receiver has to be able to accept and work with DirecTV software. A DirecTV receiver will not work with DISH and vice-versa.
