Direct tv and Winegard G2

Feeling frustrated! I'm not much of a techie so not even sure if I'm asking the right question.

Today, switched from ATT Uverse to direct tv so we could use in our motor home. We bought a winegard carryout G2. The direct technician couldn't get it to work with the h24 receiver they provided. Says we need to get a different satellite. Any suggestions? Ready to tear my hair out!
  • The Genie (HR 34 and HR44) as well as the H25 will not work with any of the dome style antennas unless you also add the SWM hardware to your setup.
  • Another feature of the G2 is the ability to permanently mount it on the roof. Some did that with the original Carryout, but it wasn't recommended by Winegard.
  • The receiver is a HR21-100 and rarely is it connected in the house. When I do put it in the house for whatever reason, I have to go in and change stuff in the set up and undo change when it returns to the trailer. Not big deal.

Do you know what was redesigned (besides size)? Would the improvements be worth an upgrade?

ON EDIT: Which HD receivers will NOT work with the Carryout? Don't want to get stuck with one, if I ever need a replacement.

ON EDIT AGAIN: Just read GS press release. Seems the only difference from the original Carryout is its size, and in a big way!
  • That all depends on the receiver you are using and whether you move it between your home or not and whether you home setup is SWM or not. Many variables!
The G2 is a fully redesigned, substantially smaller antenna that they gave the Carryout G2 name to.
  • I have a DirecTV HD receiver out in my trailer with a Winegard Carryout (not the G2 - I take it that means Gen 2?) and it all works together just fine. I don't get HD, but the equipment all plays very nicely together.
  • The H24 is a HD receiver. You can't get the Directv HD channels with the G2. Use a D12 receiver or R16 DVR.
  • Go into the satellite set up in the "Settings" on your HR 24. For type of dish select 2 from the pull down then 2 "Multiswitch" for switch type.
  • The other option is return the Winegard and go shopping on line. Find SWM dish and tripod assembly that matches perfectly what is on the house. That way the receiver wont know the difference. Youll likely save some money over the Winegard too.
  • The receiver is likely setup for SWM at the home. You need to follow the G2 instructions on how to set the receiver to 18" round (the instructions might say oval 3-LNB but I prefer the round setting) and multiswitch. It's a bit of a struggle sometime to get the receiver out of SWM mode but it won't work until you do.
