Direct TV for motorhome

Could someone give me a step by step procedure to get Direct TV to my motorhome. I'd like to move my home service to direct TV, and then take the receiver with me in the motorhome- my plan is to get a dome motorhome receiver. I do not currently have Direct TV, and am confused about the whole house receivers that are offered. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  • Thank you for a really specific response. Are you on Dish, or Direct?
  • Get a D12-100 receiver or if you want a DVR get the R15-300. Ask for an RF remote and you will be able to change channels from the bedroom also. I have one of each in our motor home. I have a folding Winegard antenna and a Carryout dome. When we are parked for an extended period of time I use the folding dish for the D12-100 and connect the R15-300 to the Carryout. That way we can watch two diffent channels and record a third. I have the D12-100 in the front entertainment center connected to the Video Switch for whole motor home use. I have the R15-300 in the bedroom and connect it only to the Carryout. For quick over night setups I can use the Carryout with one connection to each and switch the D12-100 between the Carryout and folding dish with a coax A/B switch.

Only for the first 10 times you try. :)

    I have heard that too.

So, can I take any receiver from my home and hook it up to an antenna? I'm thinking of one of the automatic mobile antenna's, for instance, the VUQUBE Flex

I use an SD receiver from my home with the vuqube vq2100 antenna. No problems at all. Just be sure you have a straight run of coax from the receiver to the vuqube, no splitters.

Any receiver that works with an 18" round antenna will work with the vuqube.
  • It's not hard at all to use an HD dish if what you want is HD in your coach. It's really not that much harder that pointing a standard dish, but it does have a bit of a learning curve.

    Josslund,
Yes, if you are currently a DirecTV customer you just take a receiver from the house and use it in the RV. UNLESS you happen to have a Genie or an H25 receiver. These receivers require DTV's SWM technology and will not work with the RV portable antennas without the addition of a special SWM kit. It's only about $100 to add the kit but it is an extra step.
All of the DirecTV receivers that require this SWM technology will have green labels where the serial numbers are found.
You can also look at the Winegard Anser (semi-automatic) or Carryout (automatic) units.
Just remember that you cannot get the DirecTV HD programming with these type antennas.

  • You just walked yourself through the step by step. You just need a DirecTV receiver, you put it in the coach attached to the antenna of your choice and you watch TV in the coach.
There are a variety of antenna types from manual to semi-automatic to fully automatic. The more automatic, the more it costs. You can choose roof mounted or portable. If you want a dome sytle antenna (roof mount or portable) you will not be able to receive any DirecTV HD programming but the SD all comes from one single satellite.
