directtv dish

I'm new to all the terminology on satellite dishes and boxes and all the other things involved. I have read through almost all of the threads on the subject of dish, direct tv, satellite and so on and don't really feel like I have a whole lot more knowledge than before. Direct TV is running a special (which they always seem to be) and was thinking of going in on it with my sister, she can have the direct tv at home and I can have in on the road in my camper. I am assuming that I can take one of the receivers for the home and use that in the camper, then I would just need to get a satellite dish to hook up in the rv. I would like to have a portable one since I camp in areas with trees quite often and it sounds like getting a good signal is much easier with a clear view. There are so many out there to choose from and I would like to know your thoughts on them. It does sound like one that automatically finds the satellites is nice but I also have heard many people state that finding the satellite isn't really that hard and since I will be parked for at least a few weeks at a place, spending 10 minutes if needed isn't a big deal. Is the slimline one a good model, it's much cheaper than many other portables, obviously a bit more cumbersome but that's OK. Thanks for your thoughts and help.

  • Ignore the post above. You are paying for the one receiver and simply using the one receiver in different locations. Nothing wrong with that.

As far as auto vs manual, I have both (but I have Dish). There have been times I got the manual tripod mounted dish aimed quickly. Other times I almost gave up before finally getting it after multiple tries. I have read that Directv may be a little easier to aim. But my auto Tailgater takes all the effort out of it.
  • Depending on which receivers you choose that may or may not be possible. The Genie is a great new technology, but you cannot have more than one on an account. As for your specific dish? There are several online retailers that have packages for around $175.00 that supply dish, tripod, and everything you need to connect to a receiver.

in speaking with DTV, since we both have the same legal residence it would be OK
  • If you want HD quality, then none of the portables provide that for Directv.

you need a slimline oval dish. I just got a tripod with a dish to support HD on the TV's in my FW.

Yes, once you have it working, moving a receiver to the FW/MH will work. Careful when calling DTV to change any settings, cause it is on the account, and could affect sisters viewing experience
like change the 'location', and suddenly the home area stations change.

  • Since you've already read them, I won't bother repeating them.
