You do need to purchase the receiver (211K or 211Z recommended, so say required) and then sign up for a minimum of 30 days. If you do nothing the service will simply end after 30 days and you can sign up for 30 days the next time you would like to use it. I don't know if you would have much luck turning it on and off 3-4 times a month but if you don't use a full 30 day period you can call Dish and have them disconnect the service. They will hold a credit balance for you next trip (but no refunds).
