That is whey we field techs often had to make a product really work. Sometimes it was "ready, fire, aim" for the engineers. There was no way for them to test all possibilities and once in the field there were thousands of techs versus a small group of engineers.
We had a tremendous feedback system to the engineers and they would literally stop the assembly line if we found an issue.
But often, the leading cause of difficulties was not finding the one sentence in a 240 page manual that held the answer. Much like a Monaco manual.
We used to say that reading the book would cause you to lose your amateur standing. Lots of fun in those days with leading edge technology coming out constantly.
