When you activate the equipment you'll end up incurring the same contractual obligation, if any, regardless of who you buy it from. As for service, we pay the ~$7/mo for the "maintenance plan" which provides for free service calls, rather than the normal $50.
With the detailed instructions I now have I'm pretty confident that I can set the system up without any assistance. That way I don't have to worry about whether or not DTV will send an installer who is "RV friendly" since quite a few are not.
