We have been with DirecTV for over 10 years. Got a notice 3 months ago that the price was going up AGAIN, so I called to cancel the service. They tried to talk me out of it, I said pull the plug when my current bill expires, which was 3 weeks away. Got shuffled to another person who also tried to talk me out of it, then she read a long legal statement blah-blah-blah. I said TURN IT OFF. The very next day, they called me 4 times. I didn't answer. The next day, they called again, I answered, they gave me a $40/month discount for 12 months. That's palatable.
When that expires, the price will probably go back up, and I'll cancel. I like some of the programming on Direct, but its not worth $80+. The local channels I get OTA, much better HD quality and I also receive the extra OTA programming that Direct can't provide.
For movies, we have a local library system with thousands and thousands of titles available free via internet streaming, our Sony Blu-Ray player provides us with Sony Entertainment Network, there's NetFlix and Hulu, and the new Amazon box is phenomenal.
Now that AT&T is buying Direct, expect the price to rise and the customer service to plummet.
That discount probably tied you into a 2yr contract. You won't be able to cancel without a large penalty.
