DirecTv Prices Soaring

I have been a customer for over 10 years. The package I have costs $68.72 total after the Feb price increase. In March they raised it another $5 by eliminating a discount. In May they raised it another $10 by eliminating another discount. After spending over an hour on the phone with them after each increase I find out there will also be another $15 increase in Aug.
So in 5 months they will be increasing my bill 46% for the same program package with 10 year old equipment.
They are eliminating and expiring all the prior discounts except auto bill pay (for obvious reasons).
Looks like it's time to switch.
  • If you don't have access to digital cable, Satellite is the way to go. I am not one of those elitists who look down on TV viewers, TV is very important to me. Directv has the NFL Ticket, that is a slam dunk winning shot for me. Price is nearly irrelevant.

Unless the pricing goes way, way down and they use sponsors for the bulk of their income instead of the viewer, there will be no satellite in a short time. Streaming is the new plan mixed with digital broadcast, is the better plan.

Maybe, but there are many areas where high speed internet is either not available at all or only available via mobile broadband...and that 5GB per month on the standard plans won't get you much video!

Actually just got them to discount about 40 a month for the next year
What was that discount for ? And how does it read on your bill.

  • If ATT buys them, you can rest assure you will see 46% a year and service will going down.

Usually I don't have an issue getting them to find some new discounts when the old ones roll off. But its still expensive but serves my home and RV at the same time, so I cannot really complain. Actually just got them to discount about 40 a month for the next year and a friend used me as a referral so I get an extra 10 a month off for most of that time.
  • Cable and satellite companies are loosing customers by the drove and will continue to do so with their outrageous prices. I have been on the phone with Direct TV 3 times in the past 3 days complaining about their pricing. With the advent of Chromecast, Ruku and several more media that allows us to stream from our computers to our TV's the existing cable and satellite companies will only continue to loose customers. Those who remain as customers will pay more and get less.
I have a large antenna in my attic which I use to get my local channels and will be dumping Direct TV as soon as I get closer to my contract date.

I recently disconnected after being a member from back in the mid 60s/70s... We turned it off when the NATL BROADCAST came out with high def digital TV signals... Much better to watch full screen high def HDTV signals for free...

It was $25 a month just last year when we disconnected from it. Sorry to hear it's all going up in cost now. Was thinking about turning it on again.

Probably means all of the TV resources are going to go up in price...

Our local cable and Internet is not cheap but at least the TV feeds all my TV sets without having a box for each TV. Internet is $45 I think...

    oh well...

  • Cheer up! I heard on the news this morning that AT&T is buying out Direct TV. It would make AT&T the largest media provider on the planet!

So, any discounts you have will probably go away anyway. So..... now is the time to switch to DISH! We switched to DISH over a year ago, because Direct was nickle and diming us to death, only, like you, it was $5.00 here, $10.00 there ... and our bill was right at $100 a month for absolute bare basic service! We switched! Been happier ever since!
