I have a KVH dome on my 2005 HR Ambassador. I went through 2 receivers with low speed data ports (both would get extremely hot and then finally quit working). I now use the HD receiver from my home. My unit has 2 switches controlling the dome. 1 turns power on the dome. 2 enables the dome to search manually for a satalite. I can lock on to a satalite in just a few minuites using the manual search. My understanding is not all KVH units were installed with the manual search function. The OPERATORS MANUAL for my unit describes using the manual search function.
