The $14 meter will not work with a SWM setup unless you also use an ASL-1 or equivalent. I have one that I have used for years, but I have another scheme that works better for me.
I carry a legacy LNB with that I use just for setting up my SL3 dish. It works with a standard Acutrac II meter, which has it's own power source. Simply drop the legacy LNB in place (minus the screws). Once the 101 is located I swap back to the SWM. This may sound harder than it is.
There are lots of ways to accomplish the SWM setup, baby monitor, $400 meter, legacy LNB. They should all get you there. Just practice and find what works best for you. The meter on the tv screen will work, but I find that I seldom have sight of the screen during setup and HD receivers don't have an audible beep.
The Phase III reflector, Ivylog talks about, will work but setup is critical and rain fade is more of a problem. Also, if you travel out of the South it becomes very difficult to get a usable signal.
