DirecTV/SWM/SD DVR

We have been using an old 18" dish with two cables, each running to a separate SD receiver. We recently upgraded to two SD DVRs. For full functionality, the DVRs need two cables each or a SWM setup. We have been using them with only one cable and living with the limitation. What would I need to add to make this a SWM setup and be able to use both tuners on each DVR with only one cable to each? The DVRs are R15-x00 types if it matters. I'm not interested in spending much $$$ on this. If it's over $50 I probably won't do it.
  • I have run into this. You will need a "switch" (think smart splitter) after the dish before the DVR's - if you want both DVR's to be able to record while you watch something else. If not, and you don't mind just watching what you are recording, then just run one cable to one DVR and the other cable to the other DVR. For the second setup, you will just have to tell the DVR during setup that you only have one tuner.
  • An R-15 cannot use SWM. If you want to stick with the SD receiver you would need the R-16 which is SWM compatible.
If you stay with the R series (there is an R22 but I don't know anything about it) you will not have to pay the DirecTV $10/month charge for HD which you would if you bought a new H series receiver even though you will not be receiving the HD signal.
I stuck out SD for as long as possible but went to HD kicking and screaming due to the awesome Genie receiver and the Trav'ler antenna. Even then I beat DirevTV up to give me the HD free for a year and the DVR fee free for 6 months.

Like previous poster said, it's going to cost you more than $50 but this is close to what your going to need.

One more time, these are Standard Definition DVRs. They do accept SWM-2 at the SAT-1 input. Anybody familiar with setting up SWM on SD?

The referenced dish is HD compatible but will work with your SD receivers. I have a mix of both at home and use a HD SWM dish with SD receiver when camping. As long as the receiver is setup properly and actually is SWM compatible, it should work.
  • If you have been a DTV customer for awhile which it sounds like you have. They probably will have a pretty good deal to go HD. When I went to SWM and Genie they came and replace the SD recievers that I had with Genie clients. Put in a Genie, two clients, converted two HD receivers, converted the dish and pulled some new cables. Cost $50 service call.Had some problems, came out pulled more cables and changed out some equipment the same day I called them, at no charge.

No, I indeed meant SD DVRs. They do exist.
Ok. Wait for Bill.Satellite then, resident expert. Whatcha got against HD?

How did you come to 'upgrade' to an SD DVR? They're not even available at many online stores, and the Amazon reviews on the 100 are abysmally terrible.

I'm sure you mean HD DVRs.

You'll need a lot more than $50 worth, unless you find it used. Need I go on?

  • Hard to do for $50. But ou might get lucky on Craigslist.
I had a Slimline with the built in switch so dealt with multiple cables. I got a new SL3 SWM LNB, power inserter and 8 way splitter for $30 from the Directv installer.
I got new SWM DVRS "free" from Directv when they upgraded the house. 2 year contract. I really like running three DVRS on one cable.
