Dish DVR Questions

I have Dish TV with a DVR at home. I have used it in the RV with a portable antenna. I can't afford an in motion system, but my granddaughter likes to watch TV as we travel. I can record a ton of programs at home. I have heard of an external hard drive for more storage. Question: Is there an external hard drive I can transfer programs to from my VIP615 (I think) at home and watch them on the road without having to disconnect my sat receiver at home? Lots of trouble when going to a park with cable. Thanks in advance.
  • Take the entire DVR with you. It will give an error message like "sat not found..you can continue to watch recorded programs" or something like that.
  • Haven't found a way to do that. however you can use the receiver without an antenna being connected to watch recorded programs. After its booted and said it can't find the antenna, hit the DVR button and watch what you please...

  • Dish has their own format for copying programs that can only be played back through their equipment.

X2 for me except with movies from HBO. It works fine but I think I'm going to get rid of the DISH this season and start streaming. That'll be the end of DVD's I guess.

  • WHy does it have to be a DVR? Will a harddrive full of her favorite shows work?

I think you will find that the videos are encrypted to the receiver/dvr and not do easily transferred to an external drive to be played via pc or other device
Even with older equipment it was never an easy task
There are others on here with more experience with Sat tv problems
Maybe they know something I don't
