Dish DVR

I see that on the Winegaurd Dish satellite system you can attach a hard drive for one time charge of 40.00 and use it like a DVR and record movies to watch latter. My question is can you record a movie one month and don’t renew you subscription for the next month can you still watch record movies from the hard drive or do you have a current subscription to dish to watch DVR movies?

I do know that cable TV we have you can't watch DVR'ed movies unless the cable is active.

  • We have one Hopper at the house, and one in the RV. We plug the portable hard dive into the house Hopper and load it with movies, then plug it into the RV Hopper when we hit the road. There's doesn't need to be any connection to Dish to watch the movies on the hard drive.
  • We don't have the external hard drive, but we do have the 722 dual receiver that can record up to two programs at the same time. So typically, we will have a dozen or more programs (movies and weekly series) and will watch them exclusively to be able to fast forward through the commercials. Annnnd, we also use the recorded programs whenever we are camped where our Trav'ler is blocked by trees/mountains/buildings...etc. Don't even have to have the antenna raised. So I suspect that a hard drive would operate the same way.

So what's your plan? Sign up just to record, then drop it, then do that again?

Yes, you can. We'll record several shows on our external drive DVR when we are planning on going camping and watch some of them when we don't set up the satellite antenna. The DVR feature will work without having the antenna hooked to the receiver.
