DISH TV - Problem accessing satellite signal

On June 6th we purchase a Dish TV receiver 211z and a Tailgater portable satellite antenna at the Madison Wisconsin Camping World. We arrived in Florida in mid-August and decided to give the new Dish a try. We setup the system per the instructions but were unable to get a signal. Upon calling the Dish technical assistance they walked us through the installation and verified that we had "outdated" software and the only way to get updated software is to set the system up on our home receiver and antenna. Thus, we will forgo using the Dish system until we return home for the Christmas holidays.

This is not meant to be critical of Camping World, as they apparently are not aware of this requirement for software upgrading but is a word of caution to anyone contemplating purchasing a Dish system to open it immediately and upgrade software, if necessary using you home dish system.

  • This problem has existed from the beginning. I bought a Tailgater last year (replaced it with a DirecTV Trav'ler this year). I did a lot of homework and learned that unless someone (not Dish) can connect the receiver to an existing account and then update the software, an out-of-the-box receiver won't work.

You can get a Tailgater with a preprogrammed receiver. I bought mine on Amazon, and the seller did the preprogramming. Good thing. I don't subscribe to Dish at home.

This is one case where you can't really blame CW. It is a Dish issue. They should have designed their software to automatically update for the Tailgater when the receiver senses it is connected.

    Next time, consider DireTV.
  • CW achieved their goal! if it works or not is your problem. They got their money, your got your problem. Mission Complete!
  • I have seen this same topic discussed elsewhere - recommendation was to take it to a local DISH service provider and they could likely hook it up to one of their dishes to get the update loaded and then you should be able to use the system.
