Does Using SmartPhone as Hotspot Ruin Battery?

I'm signing up for verizon smart phones and one of the big attractions was that I could use one of the smartphones as a hotspot and dump my verizon hotspot I have used for years --- would save me lots...

I stream movies to my apple tv using the amazon app on my iphone. Never had a battery issue. If it gets low I plug it in. I think your salesperson was either trying to upsell you or didnt have a clue.
