Does Using SmartPhone as Hotspot Ruin Battery?

I'm signing up for verizon smart phones and one of the big attractions was that I could use one of the smartphones as a hotspot and dump my verizon hotspot I have used for years --- would save me lots...

However, the Verizon rep says don't do that as it will ruin your smartphone battery --- wants me to keep using the stand alone verizon hotspot I have always used on RV trips. Am I being BSed?
