I burned out two phones using them as hotspots, a colleague did the same to his. All there were motorola phones on verizon, with a sealed in battery (moto razr).

I had Motos until I got tired of how hot they got, and that their charger plugs were so flaky and hard to connect.
I have a Motorola Razor bought in April 2013. Use it occasionally as HotSpot. Only plug it in if I'm on HotSpot for a long period. Used it quite heavely as HotSpot in February 2014 while in Florida and WiFi at the campground was really bad. Didn't notice the excessive heat but the phone is still going strong with heavy bluetooth usage which depletes battery to the point I have to charge daily. If I'm around home not using bluetooth it will last for several days.
