And battery life is measured in cycles assuming no abuse. also the speed of charge/discharge affects overall battery life... So I'd say the Verizon hack was well.. Not exactly lying, but not telling the full story either.
now for the UNLESS.
plug in the charger cable and don't even use the battery.. That's what I do when I hot spot.
The problem with plugging in the hotspot is that many will not operate without a battery in place, and when the battery is in the unit, it is usually being charged if the charger cable is plugged in.
