Dump Gmail?

I'm starting to get irritated with Googles Gmail. I'm thinking of dumping Google for my home page and for my emails. Would this improve response times? Seems like I get a lot of hesitations when searching or opening other pages. What would be good to go to?

The problem is that you have to have a gmail account to access things like Google Play, Google Plus, etc. I have a gmail, yahoo and AOL email account. I primarily use AOL since it is the oldest.
