Oh absolutely, but I go by the fact that I get no spam on my standalone email client. So I'm guessing if they sell my data, they're doing a poor job of it. :)

I keep ALL my emails on my PC. Yes, they take space but at a few hundred meg it's peanuts. I don't access email via hand-held gadget so I don't need them to be in the cloud.

That is one option for configuring Thunderbird !

It can be configured using the IMAP protocol so that most of your folders still live on the server so that they can be access be other PCs, phones or even web based mail systems.

I have a few LOCAL folders (most notably is my Drafts folder so that incomplete email get saved on that PC). This does take an extra step in the setup.

Well, one thing about the stand alone email client I use: it doesn't collect, use, and profile all the emails I get so it can sell that data, and direct select ads toward me and the senders of said emails. I love that.

if you have gmail or yahoo
they are still doing that, even though you download them from the servers to your PC, they already know what is in the emails you received

the difference is you are not viewing ads on the email webpage

And I'll add that all email services will likely scan your emails. They have to in order to detect spam and possible malware. The question is what do they with the scanned info? Some disclose they may use it for marketing? Others say the don't, though I would take it with a grain of salt as the user has no way of knowing? And we all know that user profile info has become exceedingly valuable?

Looks like the OP got his answer? I also use Thunderbird at home, mainly due to having multiple free email accounts from different services. Though the one advantage of creating a rule in webmail is that it works for every method you use to retrieve your mail, such as in a client or mobile email app. If created in Thunderbird, it only works in the client.

Though Thunderbird has an advantage of saving a copy of email locally(offline). And not have to sign-in online to read old email.

Sorry, I thought I was being clear enough when I said "I use any webmail exclusively on the web.". By that I meant that I download no email through a webmail client to my standalone email client. Yes, the servers I use to download my email are managed by my ISP, which is indeed paid for. I didn't mean to be obtuse.

Bizarre concept??? Folders are a holdover from physical file cabinet days that the tech world adopted to make their data organization just a little more understandable. Actually label is a more realistic term to describe how emails can be sorted into groups. And it is more functional as an email can have more than one label. There is nothing that works like a physical folder within a computer.

That's great, I'm glad you don't have to deal with spam/junk mail to your home email address. And you stated the exact reason you don't get any (highlighted in red). It doesn't have anything to do with what client you are using or email service. I think this is what MrWizard was trying to say also.

I use the same email address for everything and have passwords for 178 accounts that I keep in a password management app (PWSafe). I have used Gmail since it came out, I previously used the Thunderbird PC client for email. What spam I get (it's not much) gets pulled out by Gmail and I only see it if I open the spam folder when I think I didn't get an email that I should have.

Any account I have that sends me emails I don't want, I go to the bottom of the email, click on unsubscribe that is at the bottom of almost all solicitation emails (although they are usually so faintly printed they are easy to miss) and they cease.

I use both Google Drive and Dropbox cloud services for documents and photos. With all this wild living, I have never had a problem and am not worried about having one.

So we are both happy with our tech environments and we are good to go. Happy New Year.
