I doubt retina changes the reading outdoors issue. For the mini iPad the thing that might sway me is whether I can read the print replica subscription I use on the road to read my hometown newspaper, the Minneapolis Star Tribune. On my iPhone accessing through the Safari browser I really can't read the replica as is (print replica image) but can easily on my full-size iPad. However, by tapping on an article one can bring up a readable and scrollable alternative. Here are iPhone examples.

Even though the paper also has a more conventional news website it can be harder to navigate (but easier to search) and you don't know the editorial context of their news like is a story page 1 or buried inside. The replica also gives you a sense of being home complete with all the ads and a lot of news and information that doesn't make the regular website like the page for where movies are playing and even the comics.
