You don't need to worry about the value of the books. They are in your account at Amazon. If you lose your Kindle and buy a new one, you would log in with your new one and reload your purchased books. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the way the Nook works with Barnes & Noble, and the way Android apps work with phones.
