I have been using Thunderbird for many, MANY years. There is a lot of online help for setting it up.
You do need to understand the difference between POP email (all mail is downloaded to your computer) and IMAP (mail stays on server unless you specifically set up local folders and move the mail into them; good if you want to occasionally use the web interface).
I also like the editor. Bold, italic, underline and easy to insert pictures and web links.
Best of all you can cut/copy/paste mail between servers !
