End to 101 service from DIRECTV?

I inquired about having a SWM Slimline 3 installed on my motor home. I wanted to keep my Kingdome for the time being and the installer told me that it would be useless in a couple of months, because the 101, SD satellite was going off line. He wanted to just replace the dome and charge me about $800 to do it. Easy job with the power and coax already there.

That 101 being shut down was news to me so I called DTV and the technical support lady didn't know anything about this. Of coarse they only know what they're programmed to know.

I called an installer, I knew, from south Georgia. He said it was news to him also.

I'm pretty sure this is BS, but I know someone here will know the truth.

  • Only one knows the truth - and that's DirecTV. :) Someone in accounting has a spreadsheet that's got the actual date.

Agreed that it's inevitable. If nothing else, 101 will die when the satellite itself splashes back to earth.
  • It would not surprise me at some point. There are areas where SD locals are not available only HD. The customers in those areas have the full array dish and HD receiver even if they have a SD TV.

When I first encountered this in 2012 I wondered about the future of SD. That was one reason why I upgraded to the SWM RF Mogul dish. The second reason was the MH TV is HD at 720 and the home TV is 1080.

Another possible factor is the 4K TV's. Perhaps if they drop SD they could transmit more 4D channels???
