Hi Mex,
Desktops allow a decent audio card which may provide excellent sound. Audiophile quality costs an arm, a leg and your first child.
Driving head phones from a laptop--well the sound card won't be wonderful. Volume may be limited.
Radio shack used to sell a small booster amp that could drive a small speaker or head sets. It was acceptable sound quality to me.
