Thanks again for your help, Mr. Wizard. I suspected there was another battery involved but I looked at the owner's manual and couldn't find anything about that small battery. I suppose I could take the computer to a shop and have them look at it. The battery is probably due for replacement anyway as it's at least 7 years old. After I get it replaced I'll remove the main battery...

In the video the demonstrator may have "helped" things along a bit, like ABC on one of the exploding gas tank scandals (Turns out the tank was blown up by an FX expert).

But I used to own a hot new IBM Thinkpad (Still do but now it's a cool thinkpad) where they recalled the batteries for just that reason,, They caught fire, sitting on a bench, no additional heat, attended or not.

Mine was recalled BEFORE it flamed on.. But alas, there are other issues with that computer just now, Soon to be addressed I hope.

Again I ask, is there any possibility of losing data or functionality on a laptop by completely removing the battery? The laptop will be unplugged between uses. I believe that since everything is on the hard drive it will be OK but I'd still like to make sure before going ahead. :)

BTW, my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite series running XP3.

Even cell phone batteries still cause fires from time to time, although it's not nearly the problem it was a few years back. For really impressive results though, you need to be flying an RC aircraft you just spent weeks building, and have it vent on you a couple minutes into it's third flight. It's impressive and exciting to watch, but at the same time you can't help but think about how much time and money just went into that little fireworks display.

The "news" experiment here reminds me of the TV network investigative reporters who used remotely fired explosives in Chevy truck filler necks to demonstrate the "exploding gas tanks" problem, saddle tank vintages.

All HP Laptops will run W/O a Battery if plugged into an AC Circuit.

Here's a question I've been meaning to ask for a while: can the battery be completely removed from a laptop if only run on AC? Or, as is the case with other applications is the battery needed to "smooth out" the DC fed to the computer? If the battery is removed, does this affect the computer's memory? The battery in my laptop doesn't hold a charge too long and if I can do without it I will. Thanks in advance....
