FireFox error

i keep getting this error which I have to shut down the system to clear it.

""Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.""

What causes this? It happens after I close the browser and then try to open it again.

HOW can I close the existing FF process? I've looked all over and can't find where to close it at. It won't open so I don't have access to any of the tools, so I have to restart.

Anyone else having this problem also?

    I had exactly the same problem on my 2009 MacBook pro. Even force quit didn't see it. Shortly thereafter the computer wouldn't boot. A new one is on order. Doing this on a first gen iPad in the mean time. Make sure you back up your machine,

    Is this on a pc? Did you try "control,shift, esc" to open the task manager? When open, go to applications button at top and then highlight the FF and click "end task" at bottom. This should end it.

    It's a Toshiba laptop.

    Nothing shows up in the task manager.

    Thought there might be a firefox fix I was missing somewhere.

    I close my browser a lot after banking and after using other sensitive info sites. So I am experience this more than I care to.

    I know it's no big deal to hit restart but it's more about loosing my internet connection each time.

    I'm also using mobile broadband and when I finally get a good signal I just hate to have to close it to restart the computer and 'hope' I get a good connection again. And once you start turning it off and on sometimes the chances are slim and none.

    Did you check "Processes" in Task Manager? If you find it there, terminate it and your problem should be solved. If not, check "Services" and see if anything is running. Hope this helps.

    I have found that sometimes if you close Firefox and immediately this will come up. From the behavior I have observed it seems to be tied to logging off certain websites. In your case a banking website would make sense. What I have seen is that although Firefox has gone off the screen and appears to have shutdown it actually has not completed all the background processes. In my experience restarting has not been necessary. Closing the message wait a few seconds and try again usually works.

    This happens when you close, then quickly re-open Firefox normally.
    Firefox takes a few seconds to fully close.

    The other cause is you close it but the close hangs

    Two solutions.. If its just a hot-switch issue (Close and re-open swiftly) count to Ten, try again, (Dang, made it rhyme)

    OR CTRL-SHIFT-ESCAPE, find Firefox on the re****ing pop up, right clck and choose End task.

    Last time it happened to me was... Today (Swift close/re-open, waited and tried again, worked) Toshiba 8.1, Dell xp, Other XP all the same.

    It can be caused by an installed add-on extension, corrupt profile, or a stalled Javascript function from a website. As mentioned, you should be able to close it in Task Manager.

    I have had the same problem several times so far I can fix by opening Task Manager if I do not see Firefox running under applications then click on processes and end Firefox there.

    So far this has worked for me every time.
