In the defence of simplicity of the flip phone....
I upgraded to a newer phone about 3 years ago. My iphone 5S was in perfect working order. I gave it away to MIL, 85 at the time. Put a very basic voice only plan on it and and disabled absolutely everything else. No internet, no data, no text, no updating, no apps, no anything other than voice.
We showed her only how to make and recieve phone calls. Period. Phone number was ported over from landline, landline canceled so she could have a phone with her everywhere, including in the bathroom in case she ran into trouble, or in case her car malfunctioned at a grocery store or something.
Well, I'll tell ya, try to get an 85 year old senior to learn how to use an iphone only for phone calls. She eventually got it figured out, but we had to give her lessons many times over.
She's now 88 1/2, still drives, and takes her phone everywhere. It hangs off the handle of her walker wherever she goes.
Simplicity of a flip phone? Yup, makes sense to me! :)
If you're 85 here and techno savvy, I tip my hat to you! Most are not.
