I guess I always wondered why people call it the Obama phone when the lifeline program started in '84, was expanded in '96 and was expanded again to cell phones in 2008 before the current President was ever elected. - strollinExplorerAs it seems to be with any of these social programs, the intention is good, but the implementation is poor and there are those that abuse the system.
- USARMYCWExplorerDidn't know people on this forum were so far behind on the news.
Anyhow, there's a lot more to this than the snide snippets posted here. - Gadget_Guy1ExplorerEven as a Canadian we knew all about the OBAMA PHONE because it was all over the news a few years ago.

- Chris_BryantExplorer IIIs there a question here? The lifeline program has been around since the 90's- it pays the providers just under $10/month to provide service to the poor.
Nothing new. - WoodGlueExplorerAhhhh, the smell of fresh CURMUDGEON's in the morning :B
- DutchmenSportExplorerWow. I'm speachless ...Makes me want to quit my job.
- PopsieExplorerI saw this on the news: you don't have to qualify (low income, on welfare, etc.) if you go stand in line for the food stamp program. Some one will approach you while you are in line and offer you a free phone. After all, they get paid for every phone they give out, so they want to give out as many as they can. You will probably be approached by more than one free cell phone carrier, so you can get more than one phone. If you go stand in line somewhere else you can get even more phones - perhaps for other family members. You don't have to give your real name and address, and don't have to show any identification.
