Change it to "shorter". "Faster" will just about always want to do Interstates if possible. Approaching Atlanta I should have selected "faster" rather than leaving it on "shorter" but for normal traveling I usually use "shorter."
Also...I hardly ever just let the gps do its thing unless I already somewhat know where I'm going. For traveling I plot the route using Basecamp and make the route go the way I want it to go using shaping points. Then I transfer the route to the gps and off we go.
Basecamp has a somewhat steep learning curve and it's not intuitive but for me at least it's been well worth learning how it wants to work.
