Garmin GPS

Yeah, you'd think when they say "free lifetime map updates" you'd know what it means. But just like "unlimited data" on a cell plan doesn't mean what you think it means.

You are sure right about the initial update. It is a pain. If you bought the RV760LMT, then you will have lifetime map updates, We are going on the 2nd year with our and update for free every quarter. However, there are additional features that are available that do cost additional $. So far, we have lived without those.

I think, when Garmin puts "LM" in the model number, that stands for Lifetime Maps for free.

Have two Garmin's both with LMT. One for my Jeep and the RV760LMT for the motorhome. I actually like my nuvi 1490 better. The extra size of the 760 is nice. I have had zero problems updating either one since the initial download. It downloaded an icon named Garmin express and that works great. Have e-mailed Garmin with an error on a route and they e-mailed me back fairly quickly thanking me and informed me that it would be fixed on the next update which it was and it was all free as advertised.... ..Good luck with yours.....Mike

With Garmin once you register the GPS serial number to get the initial update if you have the the LMT model which I believe is the only way the RV760 is sold, you will be able to download map updates several times a year when they become available - when you plug the GPS in for an update or to check for updates if a map is available it will tell you. There is an option to download the map to your PC and then install it from their to the GPS and this often runs much faster that downloading directly to the GPS. You can also do both so that you have an map on your pc to use with Garmin's PC routing software (free), Mapsource. Downloading the map to any Garmin (and other GPS units) can take hours, just SOP.

Sites like POI Factory's Garmin forum will have discussions about when the new map updates are due for release during the year.

I saw the $xtra features. I don't care for all in one things. I like discrete accessories so if one fails, I don't have to trash everything. For instance, they offer a back up camera with the 760, I have one on my B that I wireed to a toggle switch rather than the backup lights. That way I can see what's behind me on the road. I love the B but it's rear visibility leaves something to be desired.

One thing with garman is if you need more data space you can hook up to your computer and delete all of the language's you don't need. you would be surprised how many language's there are and how much space they take. makes map loading faster.

We really like the Basecamp software that is compatible with Garmin GPS and free from Garmin. Much like Google maps, you can program your exact route, load it to the GPS and it will follow it exactly.

Wow! Compared to my previous Tom Tom, this thing works great. My last turn, I turned early as I saw a light and nothing down the road. When I was leaving, I went south instead of the way I came. Just around a curve and past a railroad overpass past the light, there was the road I was told to go to. Traffic alerts were popping up although the delay alert didn't pop up until I was in a line of three lanes of traffic held up by a car fire. The speed alert also told me that when my speedometer says 70, I'm actually going 74. I sort of suspected that when I leave everybody behind.

Some of the spots for repair or cash are still out of date but all in all, I wish I'd had this puppy when I took my last road trip in the B.

I think it more likely your speedometer is in error and the GPS accurate. Check against the Interste mile markers.
