Garmin GPS

Have been having problems with our Garmin Nuvi 2595LMT freezing and need to replace. One issue I have had with this model is that the directions are often given as "turn right onto John Doe Highway" as opposed to turn right onto Rt 234. This is very annoying when traveling and have no knowledge that a highway may have another "title" in addition to route number. Do all Garmins perform this way?
Also, would like recommendation for simple to use gps that has free USA and Canada updates and can input via voice. Don't need RV specific unit, blue tooth, or anything too techy.

Thanks in advance!
  • Yah, "Ms Garmin" is my 'Arch Nemesis'.. heheh..

I have to back it up with Google maps, download when no internet connection anticipated...

Garmin, it's a "Love Hate Thang"... heheh,

Dumped me more than once... but everyone is good, not the best they all have their "Issues"...
    looking for others...
    Thanks for the post..
  • The best GPS is already on your smart phone and it's free! Use Google maps (and WAZE if you are in an area with heavy traffic or an accident). It's more accurate than any GPS as the data is only days old instead of years old and the traffic info is real time. If you are concerned you will not get routing information while traveling, Google downloads the route ahead automatically but if you expect extended periods without cell service you can download the entire route (I just download 4 States for an upcoming trip) to your phone as an additional "safety" feature. I have never seen it necessary traveling any major road anywhere in the US thus far but there's nothing wrong with "belt and suspenders".
  • My garmin will sniff out a McDonalds 600 miles away and then tell me to exit and turn left, then right, then right, then left and ya know what I'm then on the same road going in the same direction as I was. Phones will hit dead zones. Dont rely on any of this junk. Map it out on paper and use the gps or phone to help along the way but dont depend on it. When you are 64 feet long there is no room for stupid stuff. Also payed $50 recently for new maps
  • Funny: My Garmin uses road numbers that nobody knows or uses. I wish it would use names.
  • Our 2595 was having the same problem but once I downloaded the latest maps and software updates, it is working fine again.

    Several that I've had do.
    And some other brands too.
Like you, I think that the "logic" is flawed and often confusing.

The things should be "smart" enough to know that if you came INTO town on route XX and are LEAVING town on the same route XX, then it probably should be telling you to FOLLOW xx.....and not Main Street.
  • When was the last time you did a map/software update? I update mine regularly and have never had a problem. Always dependable and reliable.
  • I have little faith in google maps as it can't find my house which is on a main road. Garmin and even Apple Maps has no problem. All mapping software is suspect.
  • must always have latest software... 2 to 4 times a year.
NEVER use the shortest route to anything.
there are only a few major map companies... its software and how the data is used.

always use a paper map before programming a GPS or phone.

I have had 5 Magellan and 2 Garmins.. current 2597 and Dezl 770.
