The Garmin 52 is a discontinued number. And, deservedly so. Unless "Avoid Highway" is checked, it will route by highway with little regard for common sense. The 55 might be better and it is available at not much more cost.
It is possible in a 52 to load stops along a route, but it is not all that easy. This is the 8th Garmin I have owned if you include the marine and geocache we have. So that is not the problem.
If you have Street Atlas, and can use it effectively, get a 55 for the driver and use SA to plan the day's route. While getting stowed to travel, just sit at the dinette and load the route. You can actually load many routes in advance.
