It comes in when you download software from some sites like Download.
No, that IS not the "only way" you can get unwanted software..
You can easily get "drive by" malware, virus, adware and hijacks just by simply "visiting" ANY WEBSITE which has been compromised..
Simply put, any advertisement banner, inline text and even ad pictures can contain links to less than secure third party advertisers.. Just the action of clicking on one or rolling over one of those inline compromised ads and you are on the way to having to clean up your system..
Another great way to get unwanted software is by signing up to those coupon links, those are often loaded with adware (many times not harmful but none the less slows down your PC and can intercept your personal info)..
Your BEST DEFENSE is to secure your BROWSER..
I find FireFox with AdBlockPlus fixes a lot of the unwanted adware and to further secure the browser install NoScript which stops all unwanted JavaScripts (note, not the same as "JAVA") from running..
Many if not all unwanted software now days is spread via JavaScripts since it bypasses all levels of security and has FULL administrative control..
Sadly many good websites use JavaScipts so you have to re enable SOME JavaScripts for the website to work correctly.. NoScript gives you the user some power back over your PC but does require some work on your part..
